Volunteer Spotlight: Marble Falls Meals on Wheels Volunteer (November 2020)

This month, we would like to introduce you to our Volunteer Spotlight on Barbara Huffman. Each month, we like to feature a Meals on Wheels volunteer or volunteer group. Especially during a pandemic, we could not serve our seniors without the loyal assistance of our volunteers across Williamson and Burnet Counties. For this spotlight, meet Barbara, who discusses what it is like to volunteer for our Meals on Wheels program in Burnet County.

Q: How long have you been delivering Meals on Wheels?

A: I have been delivering Meals on Wheels in the Marble Falls area for eighteen years.

Q: Why did you decide to volunteer for Meals on Wheels?

A: I always wanted to volunteer, but when I was working, I just didn’t have the time. So when I retired in 2002, it was my opportunity to get involved with some different organizations. In 2003, I read an interesting article in the Highlander newspaper about Meals on Wheels. It stated their mission and some interesting facts. The article made a plea for volunteers, so I called the number and from then on, I’ve been happy doing this ever since.

Q: Why do you think Meals on Wheels is important for seniors living on their own?

A: Besides the fact that we may be the only person they see that day, some of my clients, I suspect, that may be the only meal they get a day. You see the need for companionship, but sometimes, it’s just the meal itself that’s the most important.

Q: What is your favorite part about volunteering for Meals on Wheels?

A: I get to cross paths with people I never would have had the opportunity to meet. I have come across some pretty interesting people.

Q: What would you tell someone interested in donating to or volunteering for Meals on Wheels?

A: This is the most gratifying volunteer work I’ve ever been involved in and I think they (interested volunteers) would get great pleasure from it. Some of my clients are so gracious and thankful when I deliver their meals. They’re always thanking me for my service, and I always respond with ‘It’s my pleasure,’ because it is. I think it’s important volunteer work.

We are so grateful to loyal volunteers like Barbara, who have truly gone above and beyond to make a difference in our community. Thank you for your commitment to our Burnet and Marble Falls Meals on Wheels location!
